Weekend Getaways from Delhi – Dharamshala

Dharamshala is a charming hill station in the hill district of Kanga in the state of Himachal Pradesh. If you wish to experience the pristine calmness of hills away from the swirling heat of Delhi, Dharamshala is a perfect weekend getaway.

However, if you are looking for a typical tourist destination bustling with tourism activities and shopping malls, Dharamshala has none of these. It is a bit unconventional hill resort that has a monotonous way of life and you can be close to yourself, when in Dharamshala.

Dharamshala can be a bit cold in winters and is located at a height of 1500 meters above mean sea level. It is located at a distance of 490 km from Delhi and can be reached comfortably after an overnight journey.

Dharamshala has many places of interest to the visitors and you can start the day by driving to the beautiful Dal Lake which is located among lush green Deodar forests at an altitude of 1,775 meters. Bhagsunag Falls which are 20 meters in height are another point of interest. Incidentally, it is also a place of pilgrimage for Hindus.

Kangra art museum is a must visit destination if you are interested in exploring the historic relics of this ancient land. As Dharamshala is the abode of HH The Dalai Lama, a visit to Dharamshala is not complete without a visit to Gyuto Monastery, Norbulingka Institute and The Dalai Lama Temple Complex in Maclodgunj.

March to June is the ideal time to plan a weekend getaway to Dharamshala. If you wish to feel the cold comfort of Dharamshala, December is the best month to visit as you can be in close comfort of Dhauladhar ranges which are engulfed in thick blanket of snow.

Kotwali bazaar in Dharamshala and Joginbara Road in Maclodgunj is the best places for buying a local souvenir from the place.  A hectic day is best to end with trying some delicious cuisine. You can taste the delicacies of the region at numerous restaurants which Dharamshala has. Some of these are Carpe Diem, Chocolate Log and Common Ground Café. Don’t forget to try authentic Tibetan cuisine be it the Momos or the Thukpa. Namgyal Café and Tibet Kitchen are the places to be, if you wish to relish some Tibetan food.

The adventurous lot can go for some hiking and trekking while heritage walk or learning to draw Thangka paintings in Maclodgunj is the best bet for the others.

Dharamshala will always amaze you with its raw beauty and pristine nature. All you need is to pack your bags and head to this hill resort!
